The Institute for Democratic Initiatives (IDI) was established on November 5, 2013, in connection with a public activity aimed at supporting democratic values, human rights, fair and just elections in Azerbaijan. Currently, the organization does not have official registration in Azerbaijan. Despite repeated applications to the Ministry of Justice for the registration of the organization, the registration of the organization was denied. It was challenged in a local court and all courts upheld the decision of the Ministry of Justice. On April 6, 2016, IDI applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to achieve the achievement of its rights. On May 20, 2021, the ECHR found that the failure to register IDI violated the Freedom of Association. (Abdullayev and Others v. Azerbaijan, (Application No. 69466/14 and 12 others))
